Beginners Guide to Using Hash Tags

Hash tags can be your business' best friend.

Hash tags (#) are used in social media so that people can easily search for information and connect with people who share that interest. An example would be: #CarsonCityBicyclists. You use the tag within a sentence in your social media post, such as 'Looking forward to meeting up with the #CarsonCityBicyclists next week. I'll be bringing some high energy treats from my bakery, Nature's Best. '

Hash tags also can instantly create connect people temporarily, such as a tag #VenturaFireRecovery so that people involved with the recovery can quickly connect with each other.

Hash tags are great for connecting your business with your local community. You can put a quick comment with "I love #Denver" in the text (the hash tag is #Denver). Everyone searching for Denver will see your comment. Without the tag, the only people you would reach in a Facebook post would be your existing friends. The more you use hash tags and connect with others, the more people will see your postings.

Beginners Guide to Using Hash Tags

It's very simple, and you don't have to have your own tag. You just use other tags related to your business. You can also set up your own tag for a contest or way to get people's opinions. For example, you can set up a tag #MarysBest and have people vote on whether they like one entree more than another. Then do a drawing for one of the participants for a free entree of their choice.

Your goal is engagement and sharing your hash tag with others.

The best thing is that it doesn't cost you a dime.

By the way, be sure to check your privacy settings on your social media accounts and find out their policy on who sees hash tags.
