Insurance Claim? Don't be a Victim of AOB Fraud

When you're down on your luck, scammers are around to make it worse. The Assignment of Benefits (AOB) scam is yet another scheme to make others rich at your expense.

This is how it works: A contractor approaches you to do repairs and offers to take care of all the insurance details (if you sign a paper). Sounds great - especially if you're in the middle of a crisis.

The problem is that the contractor inflates the cost of the job and submits it to the insurance company. Because you signed the paper, the insurance company can no longer talk to you if they feel they (and you) are being swindled. Legal action soon follows, and now you have a bigger problem than when you started. And you can do nothing because you've signed all your rights away.

To avoid being scammed:
  • NEVER sign an assignment of benefits document or let others "handle the insurance" for you.
  • Work with your insurance provider or hire your own attorney.
  • If someone offers to do repairs "at no cost or effort" on your part, check their credentials carefully.

Hurricane victims in Florida have been re-victimized by this scam... and it is spreading nationwide.
