Emergency Preparedness – Top 10 Tips

  1. Half full is empty – Fill your gas tank when it reaches half full.
  2. Get a safe for your home – fire proof and bolted to the floor and wall.
  3. Keep an emergency supply of cash on hand, in your safe – from $50 to $100 up to a couple of thousand dollars.
  4. Keep an emergency supply of food and water (2 quarts drinking water per person per day) for a minimum of 7 days.  Consider having a one month’s supply on hand.
  5. Have an emergency weather radio on hand, both at home and at work.
  6. Have a family emergency plan in place, know how you will reconnect if you are unable to call each other, and practice.
  7. Back up your computer data every week, every day if possible.  Consider a cloud based backup solution.
  8. Consider acquiring a generator, either portable or permanent, or both.  Keep serviced and fueled.
  9. Keep an emergency supply of food, water, clothes, fire extinguisher on hand in your car.
  10. Never place your safety, or your family’s safety, in the hands of someone else you do not trust.

Emergency Preparedness – Take Action

The EmPreps concept progresses through four phases (EmPreps I, II, III, and IV) of training and preparation, extending over a nine to twelve month period.  The topics detailed below can act as a checklist of training to be completed over the coming year.

The goal is to take you and your business that may have little to no preparation and bring you to a point, within a year, to have a written plan, to have practiced that plan, and to have planned that if you lost access to your current location or ability to operate, you would have a backup plan to get up and running (if at all possible) and at least be able to survive personally for a three to seven day period.

The initiative assists a business in developing a threat analysis of their location, creating/modifying their written emergency plan, learning how to effectively structure a tabletop exercise and active drill/ exercises. More importantly, though, the goal is to stimulate you, the business owner and leader of your company to develop your own personal plan for your family and ensure that your employees do the same.  The EmPreps concept focuses on the primary threats to the regional area, to include tornado, hurricane wind/water damage, fire, flood, pandemics, active shooter scenarios, and foreign and domestic terrorism.
